There was this little Greek grocery store on our block in Queens. The neighborhood had changed and the groceries were more early 7-11 than Greek. The old man who owned it was Greek through and through. He played Greek music on an old cassette player and sometimes sang along with the music. There was a joy about him. If came more than once he would begin to tell you about what a great day it was or what a great day it was going to be tomorrow in America. Old Nick loved his adopted country.
He would laugh out, “It’s a great day today in New York!”
It was coming up on my birthday and I wasn’t too happy about turning fifty in the big city. I was looking at a lot of things I hadn’t got done in life. I wondered how I would look back on my life once I reached old Nick's age.
So I asked him, "What was the best time of your life?"
Without hesitation, Nicholas replied, "Well, Joe, let me answer that this way..
"When I was a child and everything was taken care of for me and I was loved by my parents, that was the best time of my life."
"When I was going to school and learning the things I know today, that was the best time of my life."
"When I got my first job and actually got paid for working, that was the best time of my life."
"When I met my wife and fell in love, that was the best time of my life. "
"The War came, and my wife and I to America, that was the best time of my life."
"When I was a young father, watching my children grow up, that was the best time of my life. "
"And now, Joe, I am seventy years old. I have my health, I feel good and I am in love with my wife. Today is the best time of my life."
"Joe.. everyday.. is the best time of my life.."
