One of the northern most communities in California is Crescent City. In Crescent City there is a museum that honors the northwest and the pioneer spirit of early California. The big attraction of the museum is an immense “fresnel” lens. The lens stands nearly two stories high and it was used in a lighthouse that stood in the harbor to guide ships to shore. To demonstrate the power of this lens the museum has placed a low wattage light bulb in the center of the lens. When turned on, the small light fills the room with light. In fact, it is hard to look directly into the light magnified by the lens. According to history, the first lighthouse used a lamp powered by whale oil. Yes, even with this limited light, the lighthouse could be seen almost to the horizon even during fog or stormy weather. A small light became a mighty beacon when magnified through the lens.
So it is with our light as Christians. All by ourselves in the world it may seem that the light of my good works is mighty weak, but when that light is placed behind the lens of God's love, then it shines forth as a mighty beacon. It's this partnership between a modest light and a mighty lens that lights the way for a lost ship in a storm. My good works alone may draw some small honor to myself.; It may even help a few people in trouble close to shore. But when God magnifies my good works, the light of His love sweeps the horizon and leads those lost souls struggling against the sea into a safe harbor.
Lord, take the light you placed in me today and magnify it so that many souls will be reached for your glory.
